Colby Crehan began taking piano lessons when she graduated preschool and continued with them through college. Obsessed with “oldies” in middle school, she began playing guitar and harmonizing with a fellow classmate to Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, and all the great one-hit wonders of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. When folks heard one of her early original compositions (complete with a meowed chorus) her future became clear. Even so,it wasn't until late in her college years that she stopped oogling her poster of Paul Simon and was introduced to bluegrass by some real southern gentlemen known as Union Grove. A year later she met Ryan and they played Boil Them Cabbage Down until it was really, really, really boiled down. Singing, playing and eating blueberry pie and drinking tequilla with Ryan and their friend Jesslyn in Georgia provided the inspiration for Colby’s first original bluegrass-style songs. |

The youngest of five brothers, Ryan Crehan was the only one of his parents' children not required to take music lessons likely due to the sheer wear and tear caused by his elder siblings. His musical future was uncertain until one birthday in college his parents gave him an old beat-up banjo. Ryan's curiosity was sparked, he traded in the really old banjo for a slightly less old banjo that Pete Seeger then signed (unfortunately causing no improvement in his playing), and began hammering away at it. Around the time that he was just getting down some good licks, he met Colby, and the two began playing and singing together straight away. After lots of determination aided by banjo camps, lessons, videos, fear of public ridicule and the chance to play with a pretty gal who wouldn't kick him out of the band, Ryan now tears it up on his fine Gold Tone 5-string, writes original instrumental tunes, sings, and occasionally gives his fingers a break and plays harmonica. Thanks Ma! |

Charley, too, started with piano, and though he gave up lessons after only a few years, he continued to teach himself ragtime, romantic and jazz piano. Charley picked up the guitar in junior high and produced a few fine recordings with his music partner, jointly known as "Ruckus." Though Charley pursued serious academic study of jazz guitar in college, he still longed to raise a ruckus and found his metaphorical "shower stall" out in the woods as a field tech (he insists he was a "wildlife biologist") where he could sing and play to the birds and toads. Soon after Charley moved to Burlington we began the intensive socialization program, and Charley is now a fully functioning member of society and the best lead guitar player PossumHaw could have wished for! |

Justin May is PossumHaw’s mandolin player, and joined the band in 2007. Justin is a school teacher living in Monkton, VT. He usually goes to bed around 8:30 PM, sometimes earlier, but he's making a wholehearted effort at incorporating the band lifestyle into his daily routine. That's about all we know about him, except that he also knows how to set the mandolin on fire with his picking!! He's also a talented singer and songwriter. Stay tuned for more about this friend of Mr. Sandman... |
